After working and exhibiting for many years as a street artist, abstract painter and photographer under a variety of pseudonyms, the artist will integrate for the first time his differnt approaches under the artistic concept of XOOOOX. Like a modern day pilgrim, XOOOOX wanders through the various paths of art.
This Spring 2011 Circleculture Gallery is exhibiting new works by the Berlin-based artist XOOOOX. His third exhibition at the gallery, PILGRIM, BABY! is the most personal thus far, merging the artist’s mediums of street art, abstract painting and photography for the first time.
His leitmotif of life-size female model stencils has been continuously evolving since its initiation in 2005. Since then, the artist has experimented with picture ground using concrete, wood and metal sheets as canvas. Brief experiments with color quickly returned the artist to a monochrome black-and-white palette, evolving instead in technical detail. From his beginnings as a graffiti artist, XOOOOX has been working with the medium of photography not only to document his own completed public works, but also to capture the world that surrounds them. His recent development as a painter has also gained a growing significance in his current work, seemingly bringing his development full circle.
PILGRIM, BABY! is the culmination of an interdisciplinary artist merging three different identities and concepts of form and subject matter. Resulting in the active street artist, hiding in the night, photographing, collecting found objects while searching for his subjects. All these different practices overlap, enriching and greater informing the content of the work. An issue inherent in urban art, XOOOOX explores the concept of temporality on and off the street. By utilizing rotting wood and oxidized iron panels as canvases, the artist ensures the ever-changing nature of his works. Employing instruments like chalk, charcoal and graphite also focuses on the organic nature of his pieces, highlighting the ephemeral nature of his process. XOOOOX’s artistic approach defines itself in the way of the temporary. As his stenciled women continuously disappear and re-appear on the façades of our streets, they find residence on the changing face of oxidizing copper and the universe of the organic large-scale canvases.
PILGRIM, BABY! – NEW WORKS BY XOOOOX
Seit vielen Jahren unter verschiedenen Pseudonymen als Street Artist, abstrakter Maler und Fotograf aktiv, integriert XOOOOX zum ersten Mal seine multiplen künstlerischen Identitäten unter einem Namen. Wie ein moderner Pilger streift XOOOOX durch die interdisziplinären Welten der Kunst.
Die Circleculture Gallery zeigt im Frühjahr 2011 zum dritten Mal neue Arbeiten des in Berlin lebenden Künstlers XOOOOX. Eine knappe Chronologie seiner künstlerischen Entwicklung wird zeigen, dass es sich bei PILGRIM, BABY! um die persönlichste seiner Ausstellungen handelt, die erstmals Street Art, Malerei und Fotografie verbindet.
Die teils lebensgroßen Schablonenarbeiten weiblicher Fotomodelle bilden XOOOOX´s Leitmotiv, welches seit 2005 kontinuierlich verändert wurde. Experimente mit Farbigkeit und Bildträger waren fortan zu erkennen, aber auch der Detailgrad der Schablonen nahm immer neue Qualitäten an. Schon seit seiner Jugend arbeitet XOOOOX auch mit dem Medium der Fotografie, nicht nur als Werkzeug der Dokumentation, sondern auch, um Geschichten festzuhalten, die abseits dieser Pfade auftauchen. Das Medium mit dem er sich jedoch am längsten beschäftigt ist die Malerei, welche in XOOOOX´s aktuellster Schaffensphase immens an Bedeutung gewinnt und somit scheint sich ein Kreis zu schließen.
In PILGRIM, BABY! schafft es XOOOOX als interdisziplinärer Künstler alle drei Identitäten in ein formal und inhaltlich harmonisches Konzept zu fassen. Die nächtlichen Streifzüge als Street Artist, der Fotograf, der auf der Suche nach neuen Materialien und Bildträgern sein Motiv findet – all diese Impressionen vermischen sich, bereichern sich wechselseitig in der Arbeit von XOOOOX. Das Thema der Vergänglichkeit, das der Street Art durch Verwitterungsprozesse inhärent ist, kommt auch in den großformatigen Leinwänden zum Ausdruck. Ähnlich den verwitternden Hölzern und verrosteten Blechen muss auch dieser Malgrund erst entstehen und reifen. Naturnahe Materialien wie Kohle, Graphit oder Kreide begleiten diesen Prozess. Der sehr progressive Ansatz wird nirgends deutlicher, wenn die bekannten Stencils nicht mehr nur raue Hausfassaden als Bildträger bevorzugen, sondern sich gleichfalls auf oxidiertem Kupferblech und nun auch auf Leinwand zu Hause fühlen.
