Th 12/13/12: The Outsiders (SF, CA)

Submitted by russell on

Spacecraft presents "The Outsiders," a mixed media group-show of artists working with propelled pigment and scavenged objects as alternative materials. This exhibition looks into the artistic symbols of opposition and speaks from the language of accessibility. During this new century, Aerosol media's techniques and methods are increasingly being incorporated in a wide range of contemporary work. Spacecraft welcomes you to examine these select works by Bay Area artists. We hope to explore this dialogue further. Until then, please join us on Thursday, December 13th at 7 p.m. for Spacecraft's "The Outsiders" at Inner Mission [formally CELLspace].

lOAKal gallery
December 1, 2012
8:00 am - 8:00 am (Dec. 2)
550 2nd Street, Oakland, California 94607

When Roman poet Horace penned his famous phrase, "Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero", he meant it as a call to action, a declaration that tomorrow is unforeseen and that it is today which must be celebrated. Two thousand years later, lOAKal takes the phrase literally with our latest exhibition "Carpe Diem," founded on the belief that if you put a varied group of artists in one room for a 24 hour period, you create an environment for transformation.

On December 1st, lOAKal gallery in Oakland will enlist ten artists, each of whom will be given an 8ft x 8ft panel…

23 Aug: Stencil Portraits by Thomas Muller (Hamburg, DE)

Submitted by russell on

Thomas and I have a lot in common. We both started photographing stencils and then firgured out how to cut and paint our own. Thomas is one of the first photographers to share his photos with the Stencil Archive, and was featured in my book back in 2008. When I took my Stencil Nation tour to Europe, he helped me set up a presentation in Hamburg. Most if not all of the stencil artists showed up to that freezing basement happening, and they all brought art with them. It was one of the first group shows they had ever had, and I was very happy that Thomas had put it all together (and even made a flyer).

He was already cutting out his portrait stencils then, encouraged by all the other stencilers. I've had a great time seeing his collection grow over the years, as well as trying to figure out who all the people in his stencils are.

Ich lade Euch ein zur Eröffnung meiner Ausstellung "STENCIL PORTRAITS" am 23.8. (Do.) um 19:30 in der B65 / Bartelsstr. 65 (Schanzenviertel).

Home Invasion
Scott Williams
September 15 - Oct 20, 2012
6pm to 8pm
This fall, Steven Wolf Fine Arts will recreate the studio interior of painter Scott Williams, best known to San Franciscans as an early aerosol street artist who painted murals, cars and interiors using a spray can and stencils. His primary media though, since 2000, when he exchanged spray can for airbrush, is canvas, wood, and books. Williams cinematic, stencil montages take the form of landscapes, rock posters, political propaganda and various forms of abstraction. Literature, punk flyers, Asian woodcuts and obscure comic books are among his many sources.

One of his most intriguing creations is the interior of the Victorian Mission flat that he has lived in for the past 25 years. The residence, studio and gallery is a mixture of wall stencils…

8 Sep: Rone's Darkest Before the Dawn (SF, CA)

Submitted by russell on

http://whitewallssf.com/events/

Rone’s posters are some of the most iconic in Australia, hiding under overpasses throughout Melbourne. He is renowned for the stylized images of girls’ faces - it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he has had more posters in Melbourne’s streets than any other artist in the city’s history. Rone is one of the original members of Everfresh Studios where he still works daily. His ‘girls’ come with him as he travels and now appear on the streets of Los Angeles, New York, London, Toyko, Barcelona and Hong Kong. Of all the stencil artists from the initial Melbourne stencil boom of the early 2000s, he is the only one remaining who still is consistently getting his work up.

Rone’s art has been acquisitioned by the National Gallery of Australia, and in…
