Stencil art has a long, long history....like ancient. The history spans from pre-historic times (where the hand may have been the very first stencil pattern) through Edo period Japan, into Europe where Picasso, Matisse and many others experimented with "pochoir" (French for stencil) and onto the streets around the globe in more modern times.
For our next exhibit we take a look at three artists working with stencils today. St. Louis -based Peat Wollaeger brings us a character-rich cartoon-inspired style with a graffiti edge and will be featuring his latest stencil series "EYEZ," Chicago artist David Soukup explores the use of stencils to create intricate architecture-inspired works and Seattle-based Jonathan Wakuda Fischer mixes Japanese themes with modern culture and vibrant colors.
The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2009 from 6 until 10pm. All three artists will be in attendance.

Der Autor ist gebürtiger Berliner und studiert zur Zeit irgendwas mit Medien im berliner Norden. Er interessiert sich seit Jahren für die eng ineinander verstrickten, künstlerischen Themengebiete Streetart, Graffiti und Urban Art.
Aus diesem Interesse und seiner Abneigung gegenüber der zunehmenden Kommerzialisierung der Urban Art entstand die Idee, Streetart und Graffiti mit dem Fokus auf Berlin, frei zugänglich zu dokumentieren.

Artist Shepard Fairey says that he has distributed more than 300,000 copies of his iconic poster of President Obama with the word "Hope" written underneath and that it has inspired countless other versions. Now, the 38-year-old Los Angeles street artist, who says he used an Associated Press photograph as a "visual reference" for his piece, is in the middle of a copyright battle that goes to the heart of how media is made, remixed and mashed up.
Given the notoriety of Fairey's iconic poster, "it is kind of the perfect storm," said Michael Kwun, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco digital advocacy organization. "It raises questions about what we as a culture and a legal society feel is proper."
The purpose of "artyfucked" is to document the different artifacts of urban worlds (sketches, graffiti, cartoons) as well as making this form of art more popular and public opinion more sensitive.
