Vinyl Killers 5: Show Opening Oct. 25, Portland

Submitted by russell on
One of the original themed street art shows, Vinyl Killers returns this October for another round of rescuing long forgotten records from the world's landfills. After five annual shows and several touring exhibits Vinyl Killers is still independent, still D-I-Y, and still free of corporate sponsorship.

Since it's inception in 2003 Vinyl Killers has shown over 1000 records painted by artists from around the world. A quick glance at their new website showcases both the shows global influence and the absolutely amazing things that are being done with paint and old records. With last year's inclusion of all mediums, and not just stencils, new approaches and ideas help to keep things fresh.

Media recognition for this innovative show includes a feature in last year's The Art Of Rebellion 2, a prominent spot in the forthcoming Stencil Nation book, and features in numerous international street art magazines and blogs. Last year Klutch, the founder and curator of VK, had the… Read more

The Shadow Act: Kara Walker's vision.

by Hilton Als

October 8, 2007

(Original profile appears in the New Yorker and is not online. A treatment of the profile is reprinted below.)

Shades of Meaning (a slide show, including photos of Walker's cut paper pieces).

In this issue of the magazine, Hilton Als profiles the artist Kara Walker, whose travelling retrospective, “My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love,” will open this month at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York. Walker “combs the mansions and swamps of the antebellum South to find her characters, whose surroundings are a visual corollary of their fetid imaginations and musty souls,” Als writes. Here is a portfolio of work from Walker’s thirteen-year career. Hilton Als, Profiles, "The Shadow Act," The New Yorker, October 8, 2007, p. 70 October 8, 2007 Issue

"I have made 12 screenprinted canvasses that are each about 1.5m wide of an image I saw in the newspaper about 2 months ago that hit me HARD...the mangled wreckage is terrifying and the thought of there being humans inside that wreckage is horrific... I wanted to find a way of processing that and looking into it, and I thought very hard about why I couldnt stop looking at it... and then I decided to do something about it...

By mass manufacturing an image and repeating images again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again we are desensetised to the HORROR…
